HEART

Jane Parrick “Girl of my dreams”

Jane was born December 3, 1928. She was born and raised in Quincy Illinois. She graduated from Quincy High School in 1946 .  I wanted to write this as a tribute to her because she is 84 years young today.  She is an amazing woman, the mother of five children the grandmother of eight she is also blessed with six great grandchildren. They are all the apple of her eye.

There is a story behind the song “Girl of my Dreams”. Back in the day women birthed their children at home. As Jane’s mother was giving birth, Jane’s older sisters sang the song, “Girl of my Dreams” to their younger brother Jim so he wouldn’t hear his mother crying out. Every year on Jane’s birthday her sisters would call her to wish her a happy birthday and instead of singing the traditional song to her they sang “Girl of my Dreams”. Her siblings have all passed away but her children still carry on this tradition.

Jane has taught me hospitality by her example. She is truly gifted, and has blessed many others too! When you go into her home you always feel welcome. When Jane lived closer we would stop by for dinner she would always make you feel like you were her special guests. The candles would be lit and the table set beautifully with a special handmade center piece on the table. Music would fill the air and oh how wonderful the smells that would come from her kitchen. When my children where younger the kids would love to go to grandmas for dinner because she would always make the visit fun. Sometimes she would have funny hats for all of us to wear at the dinner table. She always encouraged them in art and music. She has had such an impact in their lives. Today, my son and daughter have chosen careers in the fields of art and music.

Jane has many talents and another one of her talents is home decorating. She has a way of taking an ordinary house and turning it into a warm and inviting home. She can do all this on a shoe-string budget, a truly amazing gift.  When Bill and I moved into our first house she blessed us by redecorating our living room while we were at work, what a wonderful surprise!

Jane is a strong woman; she has raised five wonderful children.  One of whom is my loving husband. He loves his mother deeply and shares with me all the wonderful memories he has of his childhood. Sometimes he will hear a song and say that reminds me of my mother. He said she played wonderful music all the time in the house while he was growing up.

She was a teenager during the great depression. She tells a story of great loss for her family and the many things they suffered because of that era, yet her family continued to never give up. Jane has shared stories of having very little to eat, yet what they did have they shared with homeless men that had no families. I know my husband gets his fortitude from her. We have a saying in our house which we tell our children when times get difficult; “Menners never give up”.

I know that all the love and the wonderful memories that Jane has given us will be with each one of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The traditions that have been set will continue on throughout the years. I pray that this birthday Jane will be blessed and that she will be surrounded with many friends and family and that she will truly know how special she is!

“Girl of my dreams, I love you

Honest I do, you are so sweet

If I could just hold your charms

Again in my arms

Then, life would be complete!

Since you’ve been gone, dear

Life don’t seem the same

Please come back again!

And after all’s said an’ done

There’s only one

Girl of my dreams, it’s you!

Since you’ve been gone, dear

Life don’t seem the same

Please come back again!

And after all’s said an’ done

There’s only one

Girl of my dreams, it’s you!”
