Barnabas is a person that was mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible. The meanings of names are very important in the Bible; and Barnabas’ name meant encouragement. He truly lived up to his name.
In Acts 11:22-24 it said; “Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. 23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.”
Do you have a Barnabas in your life? I believe the Lord puts people in our lives when we need encouragement the most. I have a sister in my life who is that person. She is a modern-day Barnabas a daughter of the King. She always comes at just the right time during my day with a word of encouragement. She always has a pat on the back or a gentle rebuke. I am amazed at her timing, yet I know she is being led by the Holy Spirit. I am reminded of God’s grace in my life when she encourages me.
She holds a position of authority, but is humble in her ways. It is easy to take a rebuke from her because you know she really cares. She has compassion for all and when other co-workers are mean-spirited she always makes an excuse for them. I am surprised at how quick she is to forgive.
She has been instrumental in encouraging me to follow my God given passion for writing. I don’t think she realizes the impact she has made in my life or how important she is to me. We are kindred spirits and true sisters in the Lord. I appreciate the positive attitude she always has. There is a genuine transparency about her; she is a person with no guile! We have only known each other for a short time but she can read me like a book. She knows when I am upset about something before I even say a word. It is very special to know that I have a believer that I can have fellowship with every day and share with when my day isn’t going too good. A true friend, she is someone that I am able to vent to without fear of judgment.
We can share our love for our families and lift our children in prayer together. I know she is a woman of prayer and I can call on her for prayer for any situation that comes up. I am truly blessed by her friendship. I have heard it said that it is extraordinary to find a good friend in your lifetime. I am reminded of lyrics from a song by Michael W. Smith. One of the verses in the song says “Friends are friends forever if the Lord is the Lord of them.” I know that whatever happens in the future we will continue to have that fellowship because we serve a faithful God! Even if we go in different directions in the future we will have all of eternity to have fellowship and worship our Lord Jesus. There are no time limitations in heaven and I know we will be serving our Lord side by side forever.
