Psalm 139:7-10 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
When I was a little girl I remember getting mad at my mom. I decided I was going to pack up some toys in my suitcase and run away. I remember saying goodbye and heading out the door. My plan was to go hide out at my friends house up the street. I am sure that my mom was watching me the whole way and I believe that she even called my friends mom, because when I arrived they weren’t surprised to see me. They welcomed me into their home and stayed there until my little tummy got hungry. The hunger I felt overruled being angry with my mom and I went home.
Have you ever felt like running away? Running as fast you could without looking back? Running from your life circumstances whatever they may be; a bad marriage, financial problems, a dreaded job you have to do everyday. Maybe it’s friendships that have left you feeling bitter.Whatever it is in life that has left you feeling like you want to run away you are not alone! The scriptures show us that the people of God that have wanted to run away too! Some of them have ran, and we can read about the outcome of these stories.
In first story I immediately thought about is in 1 Kings 19:1-18. In the previous chapter we can read of Elijah a prophet of God who speaks boldly to the prophets of Baal. God gave Elijah power and a great victory over these idol worshipers of the false God Baal. Then in the next chapter Elijah becomes extremely fearful over the death threats from Queen Jezebel. His recent victory of shaming the prophets of Baal had angered the queen. The threats from this crazy woman brought fear into the heart of Elijah and he ran for his life. Have you just had some victory in your life? Maybe a mountaintop experience with God? Now you are listening to the threats of the enemy of your soul. You have had enough and you just want to run! When Elijah ran he didn’t realize that God was watching over him. God used an angel to feed him when he ran out of his own strength.
A couple of years ago a young man who is very dear to our family ran from life. After a soured relationship with his girlfriend and what seemed like trouble upon trouble in his life he decided to get in his car and just start driving. His destination was Colorado! His Aunt lived there and he decided Colorado was where he wanted to start his new life. He didn’t talk to anyone about this, not even his parents. He just woke up in the morning got in the car with nothing but the clothes on his back and his wallet and started to drive. He took a wrong turn, (or so he thought), and ended up in South Dakota. There was christian festival (Life Light), in town and he decided to attend. God was watching over him and used a christian family to minister to him. They gave him food to eat and provided him with a sleeping bag and he stayed with this family several days. He even experienced a young girl receive Christ into her life. All of this blessed him and he knew that God was with him along the journey. The wrong turn he thought he made ended up directing him exactly where God wanted him. Though he tried to run from his circumstances he could not run from God’s love and protection.
God loves you so much. Just as He was with Elijah, He is with you! You might be able to run from the circumstances of your life but you can never run from God He is with you no matter where you go!
